BALOO Training
Cross Timbers District Leaders -
We are offering Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) for Cub Scout leaders on August 6, 2011. So far only five have registered and four of those individuals are from outside our District! Come on XT Leaders!
This is a one-day training event that introduces participants to the skills needed to plan and conduct Pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping. This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack campout, and it is required that at least one adult per pack complete BALOO training in order to apply for tour permits.

Chinese Student Exchange
Scouting friends
I am making the final push to find host families for the group arriving on July 20th. I ask that you please share this information with anyone you think might be inclined to participate or support a project like this. I lack about 10 families (3 pairs are boys). The website has complete information so it is easy to just share the link.

There will be an short piece in the Fort Worth Star Telegram on Monday asking for host families. I am trying like crazy to recruit through "known" networks to avoid the expense of background checks. The Telegram is planning to cover the exchange and I have had inquiries from FOX. Several students (from Oakridge) will be earning community service hours through the project and AISD will also count it for NHS, StuCo, etc. For Scouts, I would imagine that there would be merit or badge worthy credit available, too.

In less than two weeks 48 middle school students (ages 13-15) and 5 teachers from Chengdu, China will arrive in Arlington to learn more about America. They are anxious to know her people: our culture, our families, and our language. The response for host families has not yielded enough families. Please consider hosting a pair of students or a teacher.
These students and teachers represent three schools from Chengdu: Foreign Language School, Shi Shi Middle School and the Shude Experimental School—all of which have websites if you are interested in learning more about them. Chengdu is located in the southwestern part of China in Sichuan Province. The city boasts a population of 11 million people. Chengdu is also home to the Panda Breeding and Rehabilitation Institute…and to really spicy Chinese food. You may recall the area was rocked by a very large earthquake not too long ago.
I realize the time is short, but hope you can find it in your heart to help welcome these young visitors and their teachers to our community. Due to the lack of host families, their original schedule had to be modified. Now, the first few days the group will stay a hotel; followed by two weeks with families. The requirements for a host family are modest-- meals, a place to sleep and transportation to their activity site during the week. Please consider opening your home to offer family hospitality:
Week I : Sunday July 24th – Sunday July 31st
Week II: Sunday July 31st –Monday, Aug 8th
During the day, the group will take part in local tours and educational activities geared to enhance their understanding of English. During the first week the activities will be centered at the First United Methodist Church in Central Arlington. The second week, they move around a little more with one day at FUMC, 3 at Boles Jr. High and Six Flags. The teachers will be touring the Seguin Network schools of Ashworth, Ousley and Seguin. The students will work three days with AVID students from Boles.

Free Open House
This Saturday there will be a Fly-in at Meacham Field in honor of its birthday and the 100th year celebration of aviation in Texas. The first airplane was bolted together and flown in Jan 1911 at and old racetrack that was located behind what is now the Montgomery Plaza Complex on 7th Street. (used to be Montgomery Wards).
Sunday there is an open house at the Veterans Memorial Air Park located at 5500 Ross Ave. That is at the corner of Long and Ross Ave. South end of the Meacham Field (access from Long) and west of Main Street about two blocks. The dead giveaway is the 20 airplanes out on the lawn. There are some pretty nifty artifacts inside including a T-38 cockpit training that anyone can crawl into and let their imaginations go wild, and practice bomb recovered from Sid Richardson Scout reservation. There are free aviation activity CD s available – targeted for kids 6 to 11. Just ask for one. There is also a free patch for all the kids. Normally there is a small fee, but this Sunday it is free. The fly-in (about 20 aircraft) ia also free, but it is located n the ramp at the Meacham terminal from 2 til 4 PM.
A couple of fun free events less than an hour away from Arlington.

Down Syndrome Partnership of Tarrant County volunteering
Down Syndrome Partnership is proud to be hosting its second annual Lose the Training Wheels program at UTA July 11-15th which teaches children with disabilities how to ride two-wheel bicycles. This is a great program, and the kids really enjoy it, but in order to make the camp a success, we'll need lots of help from volunteers.
We ask that volunteers be at least 16 and physically fit enough to walk/jog beside the budding cyclists. Volunteers shifts are 75 minutes long, and there are various sessions throughout the day from 8:30am -5:00pm. Volunteers can participate for the whole week, or just one day, as we can need all the help we can get.

Trainer Egde Training in the fall.
Trainers EDGE is designed to help Scouters understand the EDGE training model and gain self-confidence through hands-on training experiences. Any Scouter who delivers training to youth or adults is welcome to attend (i.e. Wood Badge and NYLT Instructors, District and Council Trainers, Commissioners, Pack Trainers, Merit Badge Counselors, just about anyone!). You don't even have to be currently involved, just INTERESTED! Trainers EDGE is held three times each year in the Spring and in the Fall.

July 23 Popcorn Retreat Council Kickoff-
9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Will Roger’s Coliseum, Round Up Inn Room
If 2 leaders come from a unit (leaders can not count for more than one unit) and stay for the entire training they will receive a $25 Scout Shop Card at the end of the training.
August 11 Show and Sell Orders due to Council by 5:00pm
August 20 Show and Sell Orders Picked up- Location TBA
August 20 Show and Sell Start Date
September 10 Take Order Start Date
October 15 Show and Sell Product Return and Payment- Location TBA

Longhorn Council’s College of Commissioner Science will be a full day of learning and fellowship with opportunities to earn the recognition of a Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate in Commissioner Science. By attending the college, you will be getting the most up-to-date information on ways to improve your service to your units. The college will offer 47 different one-hour classes (of which you can select seven to attend). These classes are packed with material you can use at your next unit visit and will be presented by some of the most experienced commissioners in Longhorn Council. To register, download the attached catalog and use the registration form enclosed to make your reservation and class selections.

Who Can Attend?
ANY REGISTERED SCOUTER, including:District Commissioners, Assistant District Commissioners, Unit Commissioners, Roundtable Commissioners and their Staff, and all Scouter Volunteers interested in any of the Training opportunities being offered.Degree Prerequisites
Bachelor's DegreeCurrent BSA Registration as a Commissioner or Scouter, Completion of Commissioner Basic Training, Complete 7 courses of instruction from class schedule, 5 of which must be from Bachelors program level.
Master's Degree
Completion of bachelor’s degree or have been awarded the Commissioners Key, Earned Arrowhead Honor, current BSA registration as a commissioner, complete 7 additional classes of instruction from class schedule, all of which must be from the masters program level at the Commissioners College.
Doctor's Degree
5 doctors level classes will be offered.
