Scout Volunteers Needed!!

Hello leaders and advisors,
After Dark in the Park needs some venturers and older scouts to volunteer and teach younger kids how to do some of the things mentioned in the attached flyer. These would definitely be volunteer hours and a great way to recruit. I'm going to be there at some points to give parents info on how to sign their kids up for scouts. You will be teaching valuable skills and helping out XT district gain some membership. Let me and Alma know what shift you can take.

Jack G. Smith Scout Building - free Scout Stuff

This is an important announcement for all units in Cross Timbers district!
Due to Health and Safety issues, the Jack G. Smith Scout Building, located at First and Mesquite streets in Arlington, has been scheduled to be demolished.  This decision was made after thoughtful consideration and discussion.
Although this is a sad occasion, it provides a unique opportunity for all units in the district.  Saturday, September 28th, from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm the building will be open for the dispersal of scouting materials and equipment to all interested parties.  I have conducted a preliminary review of the building with Brian Sepulveda, Activities Minister at First Baptist.  The amount of equipment available is staggering.  A partial list includes the following:
Sleeping Bags
Coleman Lanterns
Back packs
Mess Kits
Chuck Boxes
Rope
Old Boys Life Magazines
As you can see, this is an opportunity not to be missed.  Just to make it better, all items are free!
The important thing to remember is that this is a first come, first pick event.  We will not be taking hold orders, so come early to get items for your unit.  In addition, this is a one day event, we will not have a subsequent opportunity to get these items.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
I hope to see you Saturday morning,
Ron Ronalder, Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, XT district

Important Monthly Updates

Hello All!

I have a few important items to share with everyone. First off I have a few people that try to get in touch with someone at council and sometimes there is a problem so here is my Cell Phone: 817.676.8731.

TRAINING: Attached is a PDF titled "What makes a trained leader" I would like you to take a look at when you have time. We have a new training chair, Richard Kincaid, and he is ready to get some BALOO and IOLS trainings set up. We need trainers and participants. Because we have been without a training chair for quite some time all feedback and needs you may have are welcomed. His contact info is as follows: kincaidrichard@hotmail.com and 972.953.5896.

FOS: If we have not had a conversation about goal setting that needs to happen ASAP. The PDF attachment with the random numbers is a copy of the "Goal Card" and the requirements needed to get your free cloth rank advancement items (yes this does include merit badges). Please look at it and let me know when we can set a date for the presentation. On our website, there is more info on all the new features of FOS this year that makes it quite painless.

MEMBERSHIP: We need 500 new scouts across XT to break even with last year's recruitment efforts. If you need any materials from me to promote your unit/program I will make myself available to you any time. Also, I heard a great idea from a few other DEs around here. Attach little slips of paper or stickers to halloween candy about your unit/scouts! This is great at a church fall festival or trunk or treat event as well.

FALL CAMPOREE: Now the fun part! Fall camporee is set and ready to roll! Worth Ranch campsites Austin, Fulkerson, and Breitling are our sites to host over 200 campers at the camporee this year. November 15,16, and 17 are the dates and the theme is "game design". Bring your favorite games, gear, and completed requirements 1-6 on the game design merit badge to complete it that weekend. While we do not have the dinning hall reserved, each site has a pavillion to use in case of rain. Please bring your own food for your unit. PRICE: $10 Dollars for Scouts and $5 for Adults. If you have ideas or any info at all please contact Rudy Mappus at rmappus@bh.com or 817/229-0520. Please RSVP with either one of us as soon as possible.

MEETINGS: The meeting for the Spring Camporee tonight is canceled. Please contact John Scrifes to attend the next or to add ideas at johnscrifres@yahoo.com. Don't forget all are welcome to Round Table which is the second Tuesday of the month at Pantego Christian Academy. If you don't have representation there you may miss out on important info but if you know you won't be there and need something from me I will get it to you without a problem.

LDS: Mr. Thorpe is helping coordinate a special day to train the ward presenters for the FOS presentation. We will come to you with the materials you need; we just need the contact info of each presenter when possible. After this we will set the goals for each ward to help you get free cloth rank advancement for your ward/units. By the way, I would love my LDS units to come to the camporee Friday night and Saturday!

Thank you for continuing your support in scouting and taking the time to read this monthly email. Have a great weekend (we're almost there!)

Annual Membership Fee

LONGHORN COUNCIL  BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Across the country, millions of Scouts and Scouters rely on support from the National Council to provide the world-class programming and training that makes the BSA the nation's greatest youth program.
The National Council is funded directly by the membership fee we pay when we register to be a Scout or a leader.  In order to maintain their support of local Scouting, the BSA has announced an increase in their annual membership fee from $15 to $24 effective January 1, 2014.
Some of the ways these funds are used are to:
·         Develop program materials and resources, including the new "Unit Tools" and "District Tools" programs located on theMy.Scouting.Org web site.
·         Deliver training for volunteer and professional Scouters.
·         Provide a safe environment for Scouts with the most effective youth protection policies and systems.
·         Maintain infrastructure support for local Councils, such as membership and advancement data bases.
The annual membership fee is the only direct cost from the National BSA to youth and adult members.  All other services are without additional charge.  Scouting remains the best value among the many activities your family could choose to take part in.  Even with this fee increase, it only costs $2 per month to be part of the once-in-a-lifetime adventures and leadership development programs you can only find in Scouting.  For more information, click here.
As always, our mission and focus is to build the leaders of this country by combining adventure, educational activities, and life-long values.  This fee increase ensures that the National Council will be able to continue to provide and improve the excellent services you and your family can count on, and will make sure that we can continue doing great things for the young people and communities we serve.

Cooking Merit Badge Clarification- Required beginning 1/1/14 - no grace period

Robert:  Please create an XT Advancement link where we can store static documents.  I have several that need to go to a permanent location on the district web site.  I think this one should go on the permanent post section as well as the blog.  I think all the docs in the Advancement section can be a PDF with the title the clue to the content.  Please let me know if there are any problems of issues to overcome.  Thanks,  Mikel
Cooking Merit Badge Required for Eagle Effective January 1, 2014
Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the Cooking merit badge will be required to obtain the Eagle Scout rank. Here are some details.
What about Scouts who started working toward Eagle before 2014?
Regardless of when a Scout earned the Life rank or began working toward Eagle, unless he fulfills all the requirements before Jan. 1, 2014—with the exception of his board of review—he must earn the Cooking merit badge to become an Eagle Scout.
Will the Cooking merit badge requirements change?
Yes. During 2013 the Cooking merit badge will undergo a major revision. The process for implementing changes
to merit badge requirements is covered in the Guide to Advancement, topic 7.0.4.2, "What to Do When
Requirements Change." The changes to Cooking will first appear in a revised merit badge pamphlet to be released sometime in 2013.
Once the revised requirements are released, which version will count?
The new requirements become effective Jan. 1, 2014, with the release of the 2014 Boy Scout Requirements, No. 34765. The
Guide to Advancement then allows the following options for the period of time between the release of the revised pamphlet and the Jan. 1, 2014, effective date:
• If Scouts have already started on the merit badge, they may switch to the new requirements (using the new merit badge pamphlet) or continue with the existing ones (and using the existing pamphlet) until the badge is completed.
• Scouts who have not already started on the merit badge may opt to use the new requirements and the new pamphlet.
• Scouts who begin work on the merit badge before Jan. 1, 2014, may use the existing requirements and pamphlet until the badge is completed.
• Under the same topic, the Guide to Advancement goes on to say, "There is no time limit between starting and completing a badge, although a counselor may determine so much time has passed since any effort took place that the new requirements
must be used." This will apply to Scouts working on the Cooking merit badge as well.  Let's say a Scout has already earned Cooking. Will he have to re-earn it with the revised requirements to obtain the Eagle rank? No. Scouts who complete the requirements for the Eagle Scout rank after Jan. 1, 2014, must earn the Cooking merit badge under either the existing requirements or the requirements as revised during 2013. Scouts are not required to earn the badge under the new requirements in order to qualify for Eagle
