BSA Membership Information Update

LONGHORN COUNCIL  BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

April 19, 2013
Dear Friend of Scouting:
Thank you for your continued support of Scouting. Your service and commitment to our organization are essential to providing our programs throughout the twenty three Central and North Texas county service area that makes up Longhorn Council. As an integral part of the Scouting family, we want to take this opportunity to update you on the status of our membership standards policy review process.
In February, the Boy Scouts of America embarked on the most comprehensive listening exercise in its history to gather perspectives from inside and outside of the Scouting family about the impact on the organization from potential changes to its membership standards policy. This review created an outpouring of feedback from the Scouting family and the American public, from both those who agree with the current policy and those who support a change.
Scouting's review confirmed that this remains among the most complex and challenging issues facing the BSA and society today. Even with the wide range of input, it is extremely difficult to accurately quantify the potential impact of maintaining or changing the current policy. While perspectives and opinions vary significantly, parents, adults in the Scouting community, and teens alike tend to agree that youth should not be denied the benefits of Scouting.
For this reason, the Executive Committee, on behalf of the National Executive Board, wrote a resolution for consideration that would remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone and would maintain the current membership policy for all adult leaders of the Boy Scouts of America. The voting members will take action on the following resolution during the Boy Scouts of America's National Annual Meeting next month:
The following membership standard for youth members of the Boy Scouts of America is hereby adopted and approved, effective Jan. 1, 2014: Youth membership in the Boy Scouts of America is open to all youth who meet the specific membership requirements to join the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Sea Scout, and Venturing programs. Membership in any program of the Boy Scouts of America requires the youth member to (a) subscribe to and abide by the values expressed in the Scout Oath and Scout Law, (b) subscribe to and abide by the precepts of the Declaration of Religious Principle (duty to God), and (c) demonstrate behavior that exemplifies the highest level of good conduct and respect for others and is consistent at all times with the values expressed in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.
The resolution may be viewed in its entirety here: http://www.scouting.org/membershipstandards.aspx.
America needs Scouting. Throughout this process, we worked to stay focused on that which unites us, reaching and serving young people to help them grow into good, strong citizens. Our priority remains to continue accomplishing incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.

Youth Protection Training at National Office

Boy Scouts of America
Youth Protection Training (Texas-approved Course) Offered

Just in time for Jamboree and summer camps, the National Office will provide two sessions of Youth Protection Training!
On Monday, April 29, at 9 and 11 a.m., we will offer Texas-approved Youth Protection Training.  The course will be held in the Conference Center (Rooms 102 and 103 on the 1st floor of the National Office).  The course will take approximately 90 minutes.
The State of Texas Administrative Code for Camps requires that any adult attending or staffing a camp within the State of Texas must be trained in the youth protection laws for the State of Texas in a face-to-face, instructor-led setting.  Attending this training, under Texas law and the BSA's youth protection training program, is applicable for those attending camps in Texas and meets the BSA requirement for Youth Protection Training for registered leaders (Y01).
We are so fortunate to have on our contractor staff, Debbie Sullivan, who is a Project Manager working in the Initiatives Management Office.  Debbie is a tenured volunteer with Circle Ten Council.  She is a certified Youth Protection Trainer and is the course director of an upcoming Circle Ten Wood Badge course at Philmont.
Anyone can attend, and you may invite any other BSA member of your family, and/or your friends, to attend.  The only requirement is that all attendees be currently-registered members of the Boy Scouts of America.
Please send registrations of all attendees tojudy.maldonado@scouting.org by noon on Friday, April 26, and indicate session choice.  There are no other live sessions planned at the National Office this year.  If you are not able to attend one of these sessions, this course is offered at Circle Ten Council and Longhorn Council on a regular basis.  Please check their websites for their schedules.
If you have additional questions, please send an email tovolunteer.learning@scouting.org.

Congratulations to them!  And congratulations to our great Ceremony Team!!!   Hopefully, we'll call more candidates out at the callout April 22 at 7:30pm at Pappy Elkins Park.  Then, our candidates will attend an Ordeal weekend and enter the Lodge, and we'll have many more Brotherhood conversions throughout the year!!

2)  All kinds of fun and exciting OA opportunities coming up - Section Conclave, another OA Callout, and SR2 and CT Ordeals.  Brotherhood Q&A handouts will be available at the May Chapter meeting.

3)  Time to pay your 2013 dues!  Still a bargain at only $10!  Be the first on your block with a brand-new OA membership card!!   If Scoutmasters want to send a list of OA members and a check, we can get all your cards to you at one time.  Remember to support the Lodge.  The dues we collect are invested back into funding camp improvements to make your camping experiences more enjoyable.

If you have suggestions for meeting themes or activities, tell your Chapter Chief.  He wants to provide you with meetings that are interesting and enjoyable.

The Talahi Chapter meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, located at 601 W. Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76010.   We will next meet there at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.  The chapter officers and I would like to invite all Arrowmen to attend our meeting.  If you're a regular attendee, it will be great to see you again.  If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, please come and reconnect with the Order of the Arrow - we've missed you!
