Service is one of the cornerstones of Scouting. It is our duty and privilege to serve others. Seldom, though, do we sacrifice our lives doing so.  Those who serve our country in combat many times end up sacrificing their lives. That's what the Snowball Express is about. The event includes an all-expense paid trip to DFW for deceased veteran's children to meet/socialize with other children that have lost a parent during combat since 9/11.  American Airlines charters them in from all four corners of U.S., and some from abroad.  There is an opening ceremony/party (Thursday, December 11th– 6pmish) at the FTW convention center that is a surprise for attendees.   The event is in dire need of ushers to assist families to their seats, etc. There is also a big "Walk of Gratitude" from the convention center to Sundance Square (Sat, Dec 13th– 9 am) that any Scouts and families could attend and give praise/love to the families—just bring smiling faces, posters, flags, and loud appreciative voices.  To volunteer, or to get more information, contact Khoury Farrar at BNSF at Khoury.Farrar@BNSF.com. For students currently enrolled in education programs or enrolled in summer classes last year.   Training Citizen Scientists - Texas Stream Team Texas Stream Team is a statewide network of citizen scientists and supportive partners working together to gather information about natural resources. River Legacy Living Science Center is offering training in Core and Advanced Water Quality Monitoring for the Texas Stream Team, a cooperative partnership between The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Become a certified Texas Stream Team Citizen Scientist at River Legacy Living Science Center from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, Jan. 31. After this training, volunteers can collect water quality data for local water protection projects. Become an advanced water quality monitor at River Legacy Living Science Center from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, March 7.  After this training, volunteers will be able to collect additional water quality data such as nutrients and bacteria. 5 infamous internet Scams

The Internet can be a dangerous place if you are not careful and cautious online. Many people fall victim to cyber crime and fraud because of greed, ignorance, and carelessness. To make you aware, this article reveals five common online scams that you should watch out for. 

1. Nigerian 419 Scam

You may receive an email that asks you to help a "rich" Nigerian family transfer a huge amount out of the nation. In return, you will be promised a generous percentage of the transaction. The email will ask you to pay "processing" fees first. Delete this type of email to be on the safe side. 

2.  Lottery Scam

This scam also plays on people's greed. You will be informed that you have won a lottery even though you never entered one in the first place. The email will request your financial details that are sure to be used for identity theft or fraud. Rein in your greed, delete the email immediately, and do not contact the sender.

3. Phishing Emails

"Phishing" is considered the most common online scam today. You may receive an email, allegedly from your bank, that links to a convincing but phony web page. You will be asked to enter confidential information about your account including your username and password. The scam email will entice you to part with the sensitive details. Ignore these phishing emails, and remember that your bank will never ask you for confidential information like password. 

4. Disaster Relief Scam

Whenever there is a natural disaster, there is a flurry of relief activity afterwards to help the victims. Fraudsters make use of the occasion to appeal to people's emotions and ask for donations. They create fake websites that solicit online donations allegedly for the good cause. Another trick is to play the role of disaster victim and request monetary help. So, do your homework and make sure the charity is a genuine one before you donate your hard-earned money. 

5. Work-at-Home Job Scam

Beware of any ad for a work-at-home job that promises to make you rich. Avoid the following work-at-home jobs as they are likely to be fraudulent: assembly jobs, data entry, multi-level marketing, online businesses, posting ads, processing claims, and stuffing envelopes. Ignore any job ad that asks you to make a payment.

Conclusion

Beware of the common online scams revealed in this article and delete suspicious emails immediately. Read articles on secure online browsing and banking, and implement the tips mentioned in them to keep yourself safe in cyber space.

This coming weekend we hold the fourth Ordeal weekend of the year at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.  We still have many Ordeal candidates who have not gone through their ordeal, so please encourage them to attend.  And don't forget: it's also a Brotherhood opportunity.  If you've been an Ordeal member for more than ten months, go out and complete your Brotherhood and seal your membership in the OA.  Go the Longhorn Council website to register and pay.

The date for the Ordeal is September 19-21 at Sid Richardson.  Again, please encourage your troop's candidates to attend, urge your Ordeal members to do their Brotherhood, and please come out and join us also.  The final Ordeal weekend of the year is scheduled for December 5-7, 2014, at Camp Tahuaya.

Scoutmasters & Leaders: please check with these new members, if they are in your troop, and ask if they have received this email.  If not, please send me their email address so that I can send OA info to them.  Thanks.

Also, and this is very important, at next month's meeting, October 21, 2014 we need to conduct Chapter officer elections.  Please plan to attend.

As always, the Talahi Chapter meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, located at 601 W. Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76010.   Our next scheduled meeting is at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.   The chapter officers and I would like to invite all Arrowmen to attend our meeting.   If you're a regular attendee, it will be great to see you again.  If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, please come and reconnect with the Order of the Arrow - we've missed you!
