LONGHORN COUNCIL  BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

 

Dear Longhorn Council Scouting family, Over the past six months, the Boy Scouts of America has embarked on the most extensive research exercise in the 103 year history of our organization. This has been a broad-based listening exercise involving thousands of participants and hundreds of thousands of man-hours. The process has been inclusive, democratic and fair. Today, 1,400 volunteer delegates, representing every BSA Council and corner of our Scouting family, convened in Grapevine, Texas to vote on a resolution proposed by the National Executive Board of Directors that would change our membership policy stating that "No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation alone".  This resolution would continue the "don't ask, don't tell" policy for adults regarding participation as adult volunteers. Please click here to view the full resolution. The vote was taken and the resolution was adopted. The BSA Executive Board has previously stated that, following the vote, they will immediately take the appropriate action through various sub-committees to make certain that implementation goes as smoothly as possible.  This policy change will be effective on January 1, 2014. We recognize that this process has been difficult for many in our local Scouting family. We respect all opinions and positions. To be clear, Longhorn Council stands united with the BSA and we sincerely hope that all of the Longhorn Council family will put aside their differences in order to focus on the main thing - the young people we serve. For 100 years, Longhorn Council has been serving young people in North and Central Texas. The impact in our community speaks for itself:28,757 registered youth members; 4,500 young people supported by our ScoutReach programs; more than 600 Eagle Scouts per year; and hundreds of thousands of service hours performed each year.  Longhorn Council has a reputation as one of the best councils in the BSA. Our priority continues to be serving more youth, building character and teaching the values represented in the Scout Oath and Law. The leadership and Executive Board of Longhorn Council is committed to fulfilling our mission and remaining one of the top Councils in the BSA. We will continue to deliver quality programing that positively changes lives. We understand that we may have some in our family that are disappointed in the outcome of this vote, but we must concentrate on minimizing disruption while delivering a positive program for the youth we serve. End of Year Fun for Scouts

June 1^st, 2013 National Trails Day  Get out and do some hiking and service by picking up trash. First 20 to sign up get a special hike at 1:00pm at River Legacy Park.

The 2013 BSA National meeting will be held at the Gaylord Hotel, in Grapevine from May 18 through May 24. The Longhorn Council is the host council and will be providing volunteer staffing.  Schedule

Help out West, TX! - Netopalis Sipo Schipinachk Lodge (#662) - West, TX Relief Flap

   On April 17th, 2013, in the small, the tight-knit Texas town of West suffered a devastating fire and explosion in a nearby fertilizer plant. This explosion left 15 people dead, mostly firefighters, first responders and volunteers helping to fight the fire, and over 200 injured. The explosion nearly decimated the epicenter, destroyed West Middle School, and a two-story apartment building. Over a hundred homes were also damaged or destroyed in the blast. The town of West, which sits between Ft Worth and Waco, needs our help and as arrowmen we are obligated to aid in the recovery process.

   Our lodge, Netopalis Sipo Schipinachk, the lodge in which West lies, has created a lodge flap which will be provided in return for a ten dollar donation. You can purchase this flap by going to http://longhorn.kintera.org/westtxflap. Thank you very much for your contribution in helping West, TX recover from this disaster.

1)  We've concluded two Order of the Arrow callouts, and 43 candidates have been called out.  Please encourage them to attend an Ordeal weekend.

3)  The next important dates to remember are May 17-19, 2013: the CT Ordeal.  Again, please remind candidates that they need to attend an Ordeal weekend to complete their journey into the OA, and current Ordeal members are encouraged to seal their OA membership by doing their Brotherhood.

 

4)  Time to pay your 2013 dues!  Still a bargain at only $10!  Be the first on your block with a brand-new OA membership card!!   If Scoutmasters want to send a list of OA members and a check, we can get all your cards to you at one time.  Remember to support the Lodge.  The dues we collect are invested back into funding camp improvements to make your camping experiences more enjoyable.  Member Retention is also part of our effort to reach our 2013 OA Chapter Journey to Excellence goal.

 

 As always, the Talahi Chapter meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., at the Elks Lodge, located at 601 W. Pioneer Pkwy, Arlington, TX 76010.   We will next meet at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.  The chapter officers and I would like to invite all Arrowmen to attend our meeting.  If you're a regular attendee, it will be great to see you again.  If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, please come and reconnect with the Order of the Arrow - we've missed you!

NEWS FLASH: TONS OF RESOURCES HELPFUL TO DEN LEADERS! Characteristics of a Great Den Recently research revealed what a den needs to be great. Hopefully this describes your den. If not, maybe you can start applying these methods to build a strong and successful den. Our den has a motivated den leader - that's you. (by the way, parents responded that this is the most important element to them.) A trained and prepared den leader. Every boy in our den has his own book for his rank. Our den has a program plan. (This can be shared with families in the form of a calendar.) Also, our den communicates regularly with the parents. We conduct fun, relevant den meetings. Our parents are actively involved with the den. Our Cub Scouts experience advancement on a regular basis. The den leader position could be the most important one in the Boy Scouts of America. As den leader, you personally affect the future of six to eight Cub Scouts. Will they have a good experience that will influence them positively for the rest of their lives? Day Camp Training Dates and Information

Parent Orientation and Leader Training - ALL Parents and ALL Adults going to Camp are required to have this training. There are 6 sessions to choose from, you only need to attend one!!!

 

YPT (Youth Protection Training) – This training is good for 2 years, if you took the Classroom YPT  last year you DO NOT need to take it this year. This is required for ALL persons over 18 yrs who will be at Camp – even for 1 day! There are 5 session to choose from, you only need to attend one!!!

 

CPR – We are offering CPR to anyone who would like to be certified. There is a fee of $30.00 for this training and reservations are required. We must have at least 8 registered to have the class.

June 1st 2013 National Trails Day

Celebrate National Trails Day at

River Legacy Park

When:  June 1^st, 2013 beginning at 1:00 PM

Where: River Legacy Park N Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, Texas

Why:  To earn the ‘National Trails Day BSA Patch’, participate in a fun event and enjoy the outdoors.

Cost:  Hike Free, Patch $3.00 each.

Can’t make the day at River Legacy Park but still want to earn the National Trail Days patch? Here’s what to do. Fill out the attached participation / patch order form and payment of $3.00 a Patch at the May or June Roundtable. On this weekend document your own trail hike with pictures on the trail of all participants and submit your story to 662crosstimbers@bsamail.org. May Boy Scout Round Table

On Tuesday, May 14^th at 7:30pm at the Pantego Christian Academy on Park Row – you will hear a ‘how-to’ session on branding and marketing your unit.

 And by “how-to” means receiving practical ways to get boys and their parents to your Unit.  There will be tips about effective open house evenings (and you can share your success stories, too); learn about trial-size Scouting events, using your troop committee, senior Scouts and all your resources that you already have available to you to achieve success at growing Scouting. Gee - all  of this in under 45 minutes! And its FREE! So come to the Scout Roundtable, bring your assistant leaders and lets grow Scouting in Arlington.

But there is more! Philmont – in New Mexico – offers some amazing adult training courses for many different Scouting positions. We are going to hear some testimony about Philmont training (other than hiking the back-country). And a week at Philmont can be a family event.

And still more! Announcements and paper will be available on a limited basis. So plan on attending and bring another unit leader with you to help you carry the paper home.
